Five years ago, when I was 60, I started working out with weights at the YMCA. I eventually tore the rotator cuff in my right shoulder and had to have surgery. At that time they had you go to the Physical Therapist the day after surgery. Recovery back to full range of motion took me eight months. Now I’m 65 and after awkwardly picking up a case of wine (don’t laugh), I ended up with more surgery on my right shoulder. This time they had me wait six weeks before going to therapy. During that time I was supposed to keep on a sling. Well, after about five days my elbow was bothering me, so I removed the sling and just let my arm rest on the arm of the chair. This happened more frequently until I wasn’t using the sling at home after two weeks, but wearing it whenever I went outside. Then at three weeks I was able to drive again and stopped wearing the sling at all. If I did anything that hurt, I stopped. They told me that the sling was to make sure the anchors took a good hold and I wanted that as well. Now after seven weeks, the Physical Therapist said I have my full range of motion back. That is certainly way different than the first time. I’m very happy about this new outcome.

Tip

Don't wear the sling for the entire six weeks. Don't do anything that hurts. Don't pick up heavy items.

My Second First

I'm back to normal.
