Schon, an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle diseases and disorders at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, answers a viewer’s question: I severely sprained my ankle and have been resting, icing, compressing and elevating my foot as directed, and am wearing a splint when I am up and moving around on crutches. If I touch or bump the outside of my ankle, I get a shooting pain up the outside of my leg. Is that normal?
