I went into medicine for several reasons. First, my mother is a nurse and so, from a very young age, I was exposed to the world of medicine.

I grew up in a small farming community in rural Colorado. The “home town doc” in my small community was a general surgeon that left the Army after WWII and became the all encompassing small town doc.

I worked in a national leprosy center of Korea instead of the military responsibilty.

I was inspired by my father, an orthopaedic surgeon who practiced for 45 years, who exemplified the principles of dedication to patient care, life-long learning, and clinical excellence. Growing up, I witnessed him help family and friends and watched the restorative powers of orthopedics in action.

I was first introduced to orthopaedic surgery when I broke my left wrist as a result of a dirt bike accident when I was thirteen years old. Actually, I have my brother to thank for turning the wrong way when he was coming in my direction!

I had a couple of experiences as a patient for orthopaedic surgeons when I was younger and I was amazed at what they could do.
