Metacarpal fractures typically heal in about 4-6 weeks. The healing time is variable and depends on the patient’s age, medical history, and the specific type of break. Oftentimes for metacarpal fractures, I use a cast for 3-4 weeks, followed by protection with a removal brace or splint until there is good healing noted on x-rays and physical examination. It can take several weeks for the pain, swelling, and finger stiffness to go down. Hand therapy is often helpful in the recovery.
