Rotator cuff tears do not heal on their own or with time. But, non-operative treatment can result in a decrease in painful symptoms and an improvement in function by compensating with the nearby healthy rotator cuff tendons. Non-operative measures consist of NSAIDs, occasional injections and physical therapy to strengthen the rotator cuff and scapular stabilizing muscles around the shoulder, all of which are important for a well-functioning shoulder joint.
